If you are fresh out of high school or college, or transitioning into a new career because the prospects in your old career have dried up or disappeared, then you may be struggling with your future options. What career is right for you? How do you find out?
There are aptitude and personality tests that can give you an idea of the types of careers that you are better suited for. One of the most popular tests is one devised by Carl Jung in the 1920s and attempts to cast people into personality types. But the kick is that no one falls into one particular type. Usually, we fall into a combination of types. The 8 personality types Jung identified are:
- Extravert
- Introvert
- Sensing
- Intuitive
- Thinking
- Feeling
- Judging
- Perceiving
Just listing these personality types, however, is a bit misleading because they are each a polar opposite of another. For instance, the extravert personality type is the opposite of the introvert personality type. The other pairings are sensing and intuitive, thinking and feeling, and judging and perceiving. It is supposed that all of us, even if we have characteristics of each of a certain pairing, lean one or the other. Based on these personality types, some psychologists believe you can be predisposed to a certain career choice.
I think there may be something to this, but a lot of career choices also have to do with personal choices and preferences. Are you the type of person who likes organization? If so then you will be happier in a work environment that is structured and allows you to use organizational skills. That would include the medical transcription profession among others.
There is a lot of wisdom in the old advice - know thyself. And, of course, "to thine own self be true." If you understand your own preferences you'll be able to make solid and rewarding career choices.
If you are interested in the medical transcription career, you'll love this profession if you
- Are highly organized
- Are a fast typer
- Consider yourself a good listener
- Can understand and pick medical terminology easily
- Do not mind sitting for long hours at a time
- And enjoy a challenge
